What’s Happening?

In 2023, the government proposed 60m² consent-free granny flats. Now, they’ve confirmed it will be up to 70m². That’s a great opportunity, but here’s what you need to know:

What Does “Consent-Free” Actually Mean?

You can build without lodging a full building consent with council, but:

  • It must still meet the NZ Building Code.
  • You’ll likely need a soil report for foundation specs.
  • You’ll need to consider wind zones, stormwater, and wastewater.
  • You’ll need to inform your council before and after the build (for insurance records).
  • Urban builds may involve development contributions for infrastructure.

In short, it’s not totally paperwork-free, but it’s simpler, faster, and cheaper.

When Does It Start?

Legislation is expected to roll out early next year. Until then, existing projects still need a building consent. But time flies, and it’s smart to get started now!

One Rule for All Councils (Finally)

Right now, every council has different rules. One might allow 70m² consent-free, another just 50m², or none at all. The government plans to change the Resource Management Act to standardize this nationwide. We support that 100%.
